Watkinson wants to keep momentum going after Moores departure.

Moores will leave a massive gap at Lancashire.
Lancashire Director of Cricket, Mike Watkinson, has said that Lancashire need to ensure that heads don't drop after it was announced that Coach, Peter Moores, will return to the role of England Head Coach.

“We need to make sure we don’t upset the equilibrium as we move through the season. It is not a case of we are definitely going to do this or we are definitely going to do that.

“We have a captain who is doing an excellent job and we need to make sure he is fully supported in every way. And we need to make sure the group are resourced as they are to enable them to achieve their aims and objectives.

“Just because Peter has left, those aims to win trophies don’t change. We appointed the best in the game and he has done a great job for us in the last five years. We need to make sure we don’t lose momentum now he has gone.”

Glen Chapple is approaching his 900th first-class wicket for Lancashire and with all the necessary credentials to succeed Moores he is seen by many as the ideal replacement, after such long time with proximity to the current squad.

But Watkinson insisted the importance of the task at hand and said that he needs to keep focused on the Championship campaign.

“I’ve been down that route myself and others have tried as well. It’s his dressing room, and will that change? It probably won’t.

“He’s still our go to cricketer in Championship matches so for him to be doing that and having hours in the nets coaching on a hands-on basis would be tough.

“Being a big part of leadership is what he does anyway in his captaincy role. I would imagine that certainly won’t be diluted and potentially being strengthened.”

Watkinson has hinted that an internal replacement is the most likely situation, with a thorough recruitment process likely to take too long under the circumstances.

“If we wanted to a thorough, robust recruitment process now it would take months. We’ve seen the ECB do that and I don’t think it’s feasible for us to do that now.

“I spoke to the players this morning and it was along the lines of ‘it will be a disruption, but rest assured we will do everything we can to make sure you have the same resources to achieve what you need to’.

“When we get to the end of the season we’ve got time to breathe and see what a pre-season preparation looks like. Right now we don’t have the luxury of buying time.”
