Vince made his eleventh first class century as Hampshire finished the second day on 417-9. |
The second day of Hampshire’s trip to
Gloucestershire certainly belonged to the visitors, after they claimed five
wickets for 12 runs this morning and closed on a healthy total of 417-9.
After a period of uncertainty with the bat,
Hampshire put their stamp on the match, led by vice-captain, James Vince, who
made 144 to put the visitors in the ascendancy.
Debutant Kyle Abbot lived up to expectation
for Hampshire, claiming three wickets in the morning session to finish with
figures of 5-67 and seam companion, James Tomlinson (4-68) ensured that
Gloucestershire were restricted to 304.
Abbot’s most significant breakthrough
proved to be that of William Tavare (139) and the fast bowler made further
progress to put the hosts on top.
Hampshire’s response began with assurance
as captain, Jimmy Adams (41) led proceedings, but his partner, Michael
Carberry, was unable to escape from an absence in form, as he made just 27.
Useful contributions from Liam Dawson (22)
and Will Smith (41) in the middle order supported the steady start made by the
Hampshire openers, but the loss of three wickets for four runs before tea put
the match back in the balance, with Hampshire 213-6.
Vince’s 144 ensured that the second day
would belong to Hampshire, as he made his 11th first-class century in 147 deliveries
and was supported well in his 96-run stand with Smith.
Wicket keeper, Adam Wheater (81*) followed
suit, as he and Vince made 149 runs for the seventh wicket, before Will Gidman
(4-66) trapped the latter LBW late in the day.
Further success for the visitors came when
Matt Coles added a quick-fire 25 to see that Hampshire recorded full batting
bonus points with ease, closing with a lead of 113 runs.
