Warwickshire claimed the spoils on the
first day of their trip to Lancashire, after they bowled the hosts out for 247,
claiming six wickets for 79 runs and responded well with the bat, closing on
63-0.
Paul Horton batted for nearly two sessions,
earning a patient score of 83 to steer Lancashire in the right direction, but
the hosts struggled against Chris Woakes (5-63) as Warwickshire denied them a
second batting point.
After losing Luis Reece (10) early on,
Lancashire recovered to 85-1, with Horton and Andrea Agtahangelou reforming the
innings in to a convincing first session.
Agathangelou played with confidence and a
degree of luck, but was able to find the boundary on five occasions on his way
to 48, but was caught behind before lunch in search of his fifty.
The true cost of this wicket came into
fruition once play resumed, as Ashwell Prince (0) also edged behind to Tim
Ambrose, and at 85-3 Warwickshire had fought their way back after consistent
bowling in the morning session.
Luke Procter’s innings of 37 proved to be
valuable as he and Horton administered resistance against a tough bowling
attack, which was without Riki Clarke after he broke his finger last week
against Sussex.
Their fourth-wicket partnership worth 83
put Lancashire back on track and Horton made half-century in 133 balls, as the
hosts resumed a competitive stance on the match.
But Procter’s attempt to play the ball into
the leg side resulted in a simple catch for Ateeq Javid at square-leg and after
batting for most of the afternoon session, Procter will be disappointed with
his shot selection.
Jos Buttler made a contribution of 28 on
debut, playing with the flamboyance we have become accustomed to but, in
chasing a wide ball, he too was caught behind.
He and Chapple added 41 after Lancashire
lost three wickets for eight runs and the innings had started to gain much-needed
momentum.
But Chapple became the next man to be
caught behind by Ambrose, his fifth catch of the innings, and when he fell for
29 Lancashire were agonizingly close to their second batting point.
James Anderson failed to see Lancashire
over the line, edging to second-slip off of his second delivery, leaving Simon
Kerrigan unbeaten on two.
Warwickshire openers, Varun Chopra (29) and
William Porterfield (30) successfully navigated the remainder of the day,
finishing on a valuable score of 63-0 after 19 overs as the visitors took
charge of proceedings.
