Lancashire captain Glen Chapple will take control for the remainder of the 2014 season after the departure of the newly appointed England coach, Peter Moores.
Chapple has been a player at Lancashire for more than two decades and will be assisted by second XI coach, Gary Yates for the rest of the current season.
Moores completed his final game in charge against Warwickshire on Wednesday, earning an unlikely draw after bad light intervened.
After the match, Moores commented on his potential successor and said: “He [Glen] has what it takes. He has five years of leadership as captain. He has 22 years in the game so knows the sport very well.
“The important thing is that he is progressive. He has stayed in the game because he has been able to mix the old and the new. Some of the traditions of the game you can never get away from, but you also need to embrace new things."
Chapple claimed his 900th first-class wicket for Lancashire in Moores' final match in charge and has all the necessary credentials to succeed Moores on a permanent basis, should Chapple decide to retire at the end of the season.
As captain, Chapple has played an important part in the overall set-up during Moores' time at Lancashire, but will ultimately take on more responsibility now that Moores has reassumed his role as England coach.
Chapple said: "My role will inevitably be bigger because Peter's not here, but at the same time I've been involved in team selection for five years now.
"We've got a lot of resources at the club and a lot of highly qualified coaches, and we'll back ourselves to be great until the club tells us anything different."
Commenting on his former mentor, Chapple said: "I rate him very highly as a coach. The lads are very pleased for him because he's been terrific for us as a coach. We wish him every success.
"He's taught me a lot about the game, about what you see from the sidelines when you're not a player, and in that respect he's inspired me to want to stay in the game."
Lancashire's next match starts this Sunday at Northamptonshire, a match they will be keen to win after an indifferent start to the season against the side which they beat twice last season on their way to the Division Two title.
