Paul Horton and Luis Reece managed to face the rest of the day unscathed. |
Just 25.4 overs were possible on the third
day of Lancashire’s contest with Warwickshire after persistent rain prevented
play from starting until 4:45, causing 70 overs to be lost.
Lancashire progressed to 46-0, navigating
22 overs in the closing stages of the day, after successfully removing the
final Warwickshire batsman.
The visitors resumed play on 316-9 with a
healthy lead of 69 runs, but were only able to add a further eight runs to
their total before James Anderson struck.
After an unsuccessful day with the ball
yesterday, Anderson cleaned-up Oliver Hannon-Dalby for seven, leaving Keith
Barker unbeaten on 26, as Warwickshire were bowled out for 324.
For the remainder of play it was all about
survival, which, after a tough start to the season with the bat, was an
unsettling proposal to the Lancashire openers, Paul Horton (27) and Luis Reece
(9).
However, the pair were able to ensure that
the hosts enter the final day unscathed, thanks to a defensive, if not entirely
enthralling session of batting, with Warwickshire’s lead cut down to just 31
runs.
A result seems unlikely in this match given
the amount of time lost on the third day and with Lancashire still trailing it
is unlikely that either side will risk losing the match considering their underwhelming
starts to the 2014 campaign.
