Lancashire Vs. Hampshire LVCC day one.

Honours even at Southport.

A balanced opening day of cricket resulted in the hosts closing on 296-8 after they had won the toss and chose to bat first, as Lancashire come ever closer to returning to the first division.

Ashwell Prince (63) and Luke Procter contributed the bulk of the runs, the latter top-scoring with 65 not out as he and Luis Reece both made their fifth consecutive fifties against a hindered bowling attack that was without Danny Briggs due to international commitments.

Reece, having just made his half century before lunch, fell soon after the break, giving James Tomlinson his second of three wickets, having already removed Paul Horton (4) earlier in the day.

Lancashire's second wicket stand attributed 120 runs with ease, especially when compared with how fellow batsmen struggled to the same. Steven Croft stood in for Simon Katich, who was suffering from a back spasm he suffered on Monday, but he faced 52 balls for just nine runs.

His 30-run stand with Andrea Agathangelou (30) made for uncomfortable viewing, after a sizeable crowd were treated to top-notch batting in the first session.

Towards the end of the first day Tom Smith (28) and Gareth Cross (26) made useful contributions as Procter led the way, finishing the day unbeaten as he hopes to see Lancashire past 300 early-on tomorrow.
