White and
Hales storm Lightning.
Alex Hales (right) made 82 and Graeme White took 5-22 as Notts won by 60 runs. |
Both
teams had already qualified from the group stages, but the visitors response
was halted by left-arm spinner Graeme White, who claimed figures of 5-22 amidst
the poor reply of Lancashire, who suffered only their third defeat of this
campaign so far.
The
Outlaws capitalised on being put in to bat by Glen Chapple, as the unforgiving
partnership of Alex Hales and Michael Lumb smashed 59 before the first wicket
fell. Lumb's quick fire 30 was abruptly ended by Chapple, when he picked out
Kabir Ali at mid-on, but Hales continued his onslaught on the Lancashire
bowlers.
Hales hit
a total of 6 sixes and 3 fours, taking full advantage of the short boundary as
he raced to a half-century from just 33 balls. The England international looked
certain to pass three-figures but was run out by a direct-hit from Tom Smith,
falling for 82.
Other
contributions from 'Riki' Wessles (22) and wicket-keeper Chris Read (19)
boosted the Nottinghamshire total, but the innings was slowed-down by spinner
Steven Croft, who bowled four overs for just 17 runs.
Captain
Chapple led by example with 2-31, but his colleagues were treated to a much
more frustrating time with the ball. Ali leaked 49 runs from his allocation,
picking up the wicket of Samit Patel, and Mitch McClenaghan was similarly
expensive, returning with 1-41.
After
being subjected to such a belligerent performance, Lancashire's response began
in the worst way imaginable, as Stephen Moore chipped the ball back to Patel,
and the first ball would set the tone for the innings as a whole.
Tom Smith
followed his score of 42 against Yorkshire with 22, but he was the first of
many victims to be claimed by White, as Lancashire limped to 51-3. Steven Croft
managed 23, but his cameo was brought to an end when he was trapped LBW by
White.
With a
high score of just 27 from Ashwell Prince, the visitors were never likely to
compete and a delay for heavy rain provided a minor respite to Lancashire who
had fallen to 82-5.
The
Lightning were eventually put out of their misery when Prince launched the ball
in the air, with former Lancashire player Steven Mullaney taking the decisive
catch, as Patel finished with 3-34.
In stark
contrast to the elation of the previous match versus Yorkshire, the visitors
were on the wrong end of a comprehensive defeat and by completing the double
over Lancashire, Notts have earned a home tie in the quarter-finals.
