Chapple
leads revival in top-of-table clash.
Lancashire
captain Glen Chapple took 3-60 as the visitors bounced back after a
disappointing morning session. At 90-0 the decision to put Northamptonshire in
to bat seemed to be the wrong one, but Lancashire claimed five wickets for 69
runs, restoring any chance of victory.
The hosts
closed on a healthy 275-7 with Australian Cameron White 61 not out and keeper
David Murphy on 28. Earlier in the day James Middlebrook made 57 before he was
bizarrely run out as David Sales (18) refused to run. This came shortly after
Kyle Hogg had comprehensively bowled Kyle Coezter for 38, subsequently ending a
90-run stand.
Sales
gave Chapple his first wicket, edging behind to Gareth Cross and Ben Duckett
lost his off-stump after a promising knock of 29. Andrew Hall managed to face
just three balls before he chipped to Simon Katich for a duck, giving Chapple
his third victim.
Matthew
Spriegel's wicket gave Lancashire their second and final bowling point of the
day, as Andrea Agathangelou caught the former Surrey man off of Simon Kerrigan
for 20. After a largely unsuccessful day with the ball, Wayne White took
advantage of a lose shot from David Willey (6) who was caught by Karl Brown,
who had made two drops prior to this.
White's
125-ball fifty was key to the hosts recovery and his unbeaten 64-run stand with
Murphy is proving to frustrate Lancashire, who beat Northamptonshire inside two
days in the reverse fixture.
Simon
Kerrigan summed up the day well saying "we came back really well from 90-0
at lunch. It's been a really good fight back and we showed what we are all
about".
