Anderson shines in 2014 curtain-raiser at Trent Bridge.

Anderson was the pick of the Lancashire bowlers.
James Anderson claimed 5-54 as Nottinghamshire closed on 270-9 after Samit Patel led Nottinghamshire’s recovery with 93 on the first day of the 2014 season.

A 95-run stand between Patel and the recent World Cup opener, Alex Hales (61) allowed the hosts back in to the match after a tough morning session saw the Nottinghamshire top order knocked back to 20-3.

Anderson benefitted from the overcast conditions after his side had won the toss and was supported by Wayne White (2-53) and Kabir Ali (2-65), as Lancashire retained control in the evening session.

Ali claimed the first Lancashire wicket of the season, delivering a perfect yorker to former Lancastrian, Steven Mullaney (3), who was bowled with the score at 13-1.

Anderson grabbed the next two wickets for the visitors, the first that of Phil Jaques (10), whose edge found stand-in captain, Paul Horton at first slip and when Michael Lumb (4) attempted to a leave, he managed to inside-edge the ball on to his stumps.

Nottinghamshire launched a recovery through Patel and Riki Wessels, earning 85 runs for the fourth-wicket partnership and just as Wessels (39) was starting to find his feet he became Anderson’s third victim at 105-4.

Patel narrowly missed out on his 17th first-class century, feathering the ball down the leg side to Alex Davies off Wayne White, but was fortunate to carry on his innings after being dropped on 71 and 92.

White struck again in the evening session, removing Nottinghamshire captain, Chris Read (10), leaving the hosts 215-6.

Hales looked in good touch reaching 61, but Anderson returned with menace to earn his seventh five-wicket haul at Trent Bridge, removing Hales and Luke Fletcher (10), before bad light ended play prematurely.
