Rain spoils first day of trip to Taunton Vale

Just 2.3 overs were possible on the opening day of Lancashire's three-day friendly against Somerset at Taunton Vale after heavy and continuous rain put a halt to the pre-season fixture.

The Red Rose were put into bat by home captain Chris Rogers with Karl Brown and Haseeb Hameed each hitting a boundary before the players left the field, as Lancashire reached 12/0.

Persistent rain had been scheduled for the first day of play, although tomorrow appears to promise sunshine throughout, which should allow both teams the chance to practice ahead of the season.

Boosted by the return of James Anderson, Lancashire would have enjoyed the chance to bowl first on an overcast day, but the practice of batting in early-season conditions will be just as important by the time Ashley Giles' side come to face Nottinghamshire in their first Championship match of 2016 at Old Trafford.

In a repeat of their pre-season friendly from last year, Lancashire and Somerset will each hope for further play tomorrow in the west country, with both teams hoping to avoid the drop and compete for silverware in Division One of the four-day contest this summer.
