Rain restricts Lancashire progress.
Just 21 overs were bowled on the first day at Emirates Old Trafford. |
The
hosts dominated proceedings on a rain-interrupted first day at Old Trafford,
closing on 92-0 after being put in to bat by bottom of the table
Leicestershire.
Lancashire required a further 18 points to
secure promotion before this tie began and with the weather set to improve for
the remainder of the match there is still every chance that they will achieve
victory over Leicestershire, who are yet to win in this seasons Championship
campaign.
Paul Horton led the Division Two leaders’
first innings with an unbeaten 42, relishing his role as stand-in captain in
the absence of Glen Chapple, who suffered a hamstring injury at Southport in
Lancashire’s win over Hampshire.
Zimbabwean international Kyle Jarvis was
thought to be in contention to replace Chapple, but came second to Oliver Newby
who is yet to play in the County Championship this season.
Lancashire’s sixth opening combination of
the season appears to have established itself as the one for the future, as
Horton and partner, Luis Reece closed in on their third hundred-run stand of
the season.
Reece (31) was the initial aggressor,
capitalising on the inexperienced bowling line-up of the visitors, which failed
to take a wicket in the 21 overs bowled today.
But the skipper soon found his feet, racing
towards his fourth half-century of the season, an innings that currently
contains 8 fours.
The 50 partnership was brought up in just
60 balls, rubbing salt in to the wounds of a severely inured Leicestershire
side, which is without Shiv Thakor, Josh Cobb and Matthew Hoggard, who
announced his retirement today.
The players left the field early for lunch,
but were unable to return after torrential rain ended play at 4:00 pm.
