Lancashire sign Australian Siddle for 2015

Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle has joined Lancashire as their overseas player for the first half of the 2015 season.

The Ashes-winning bowler represented Nottinghamshire last year claiming 37 wickets in just 11 matches at an average of 31.48 and brings a much-needed to boost to Lancashire’s bowling attack.

Siddle will start the new season at Emirates Old Trafford and is due to finish his time at the club at the end of July, playing predominantly four-day cricket. He joins Lancashire at a transitional stage with a new coach in Ashley Giles and captain, the homegrown all-rounder Tom Smith.

The absence of Kyle Hogg and Kabir Ali has left the recently-relegated Red Rose county in a spot of bother with former club captain Glen Chapple now occupying a player-coach role under the new leadership of another former Ashes winner in Giles.

Siddle played in all ten matches contested between England and Australia in the back-to-back Ashes series of 2013-14 and has taken 192 wickets in 56 Tests at an average of 30.45. He was unable to play against Lancashire in their opening match of the 2014 season due to a delayed arrival in England, but played a key role in the reverse fixture at Liverpool to help the visitors claim a one-wicket victory.

Lancashire’s newly appointed Director of Cricket said: "Peter is a world class bowler with a tremendous pedigree. Having him available for such an extended period will give our County Championship campaign a real boost."

The 30-year-old bowler was part of a resurgent Australian side who were able to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat in England to thump Alastair Cook’s side 5-0 down-under.

Siddle said: "I enjoyed my time in England last season with Nottinghamshire and when I heard of Lancashire's interest I had no hesitation in speaking with Ashley [Giles].

"I am looking forward to playing my cricket at Emirates Old Trafford, which is such a fantastic international cricket ground."
