Yardy century gives Sussex edge.

Micahel Yardy closed on 132 not out as he led Sussex's recovery on the first day of their match at Old Trafford, ably assisted by James Anyon (35) as they shared 74 for the eighth-wicket after the visitors had slumped to 176-7.

Sussex reached an impressive score of 276-8, closing in a commanding position after the Lancashire seamers claimed five wickets for 64 runs, with Tom Smith earning 3-69.

Kyle Jarvis made his first start for the first XI this season, returning figures of 2-84, with Karl Brown and Steven Croft also earning recalls after impressive spells for the second team.

Sussex's decision to bat first seemed to be vindicated at 97-1 with Chris Nash's return earning the visitors a solid 40, but the innings wavered in the afternoon session as Lancashire took control.

Jarvis claimed two LBW's to remove Matt Machan and Luke Wright cheaply and Yardy's efforts seemed to be in vain after an 80-run stand with Nash.

At 157-6 Ben Brown became the next batsmen to fall without making a sizeable contribution, providing Luke Procter with his first and only wicket of the day.

But support came in an unlikely form as Anyon's patient stand of 118 balls thwarted the danger imposed by a daunting Lancashire bowling attack, which was without James Anderson after benign recalled into the limited overs squad.

His absence was felt after taking 10-89 in the previous match and the eighth-wicket stand proved to frustrate the Lancashire side after they had made an good impression in the first two session.

Smith eventually broke through Sussex's defence at 250-8, by which time the visitors had not only saved their first innings, but were on their way to building a solid total.

Yardy passed three figures in 154 balls to prolong Lancashire's cause in removing the final two wickets, with Steve Magoffin (7*) providing useful assistance before bad light ended play prematurely.
