Lancashire achieve record-breaking win against Essex.
Chapple took 5-9 and Hogg 4-11. |
Today Lancashire managed an astounding feat, bowling Essex out for 20, subsequently reaching an innings and 105 run victory away from home, entailing Essex's lowest ever first-class score.
The day started with sombre tones, as Simon Katich (122) felt he was unjustly given out LBW to David Masters, who finished with 4-72.
At this stage the match was still in the balance as Lancashire were eight down with a minimal lead, but Kyle Hogg, Glen Chapple and Simon Kerrigan had other ideas with the first two reaching fifty and the latter managing a steady 30.
The true value of Chapple and Hogg however would not come through their efforts with the bat.

When Essex had finally bowled out Lancashire they had a lead of 125, hardly a cause to rush from Essex's perspective - but they did not seem to think.
At 5-0 nobody could believe that fifteen runs later the innings would be over, But Tom Westley, Hamish Rutherford and Owais Shah all fell with Essex on five, the first real stage where a miracle was on the helm.
Ryan Ten Doeschate then left a straight ball from Chapple and walked before the umpire had even lifted his finger. Ben Foakes was then trapped LBW by Kyle Hogg, with Essex on 11-5.
Three wickets then fell on 15, the first of which was a humorous run out, involving the captains James Foster and Chapple. The Lancashire skipper run out the top-scorer from the first innings but this was hardly a concern of Lancashire's.
Graham Napier then replicated Ten Doeschate by leaving a straight delivery and walking before Baldwin had confirmed his wicket. Although it was not a hatrick, the ex-Lancashire man Sajid Mahmood was then bowled with Essex 15-8.
Jaik Mickelburgh had watched all eight wickets fall and in all honesty the will to carry on had been surrendered long ago, as he was next to fall achieving half of Essex's total.
The last wicket fell, also on 20, at which point the Lancashire players fell in to pandaemonium and who can blame them.
